How much consideration do you put into the sunscreen you take on vacation? If you’re like most people you go to the local store and pick up a bottle of sunscreen and your good to go. For me when it comes to my sunscreen I am very particular. I care so much about my skin and what I put on it that I have done extensive research into the products available on the market and what to look when purchasing a sunscreen.
I grew up in Montreal, Quebec and like most French women I pay a great deal of attention to my skin and the types products I use. When purchasing a sunscreen there are some key components to look for;
1) Look for European brand sunscreens. Why you might be asking yourself? European brands process new ingredients faster, meaning the newest and best ingredients to help prevent Skin Cancer will come in sunscreens out of Europe.
2) Don’t worry about the SPF level. Since the SPF 100 came out a few years ago people believe a higher SPF means its better for your skin. Truthfully it doesn’t make a huge difference, if anything it gives you a false sense of security in the sunscreen your wearing. If you have a fair skin tone SPF 50 is recommend, for a darker skin tone an SPG 30 is perfect.
3) Shot glass amount is a must. You have a lot of square footage to cover when applying your sunscreen and making sure you apply a decent amount is key to ensuring you don’t burn. It is also important to remember to reapply, reapply, reapply.
When I moved to the United States a few years ago, I had to relearn everything because most products that I used to buy in Montreal are not available in the US. I was shocked when I couldn’t buy my sunscreen of choice, Biotherm SPF 30 Melting Milk with a Citrus Fragrance. You can buy this sunscreen pretty much anywhere in the world, except the United States, and why is that. The FDA has not authorized the sale of sunscreens, which contain Mexoryl SX Octocrylene Titanium Dioxide. When I spoke with my dermatologist regarding this ingredient his first reaction was to go to Canada to buy your sunscreen like you always have. He said that Mexoryl as an ingredient was one of the best on the market.
It was crazy to me that I couldn’t buy one of the best cancer preventing sunscreens in the world in the United States because the main ingredient was still waiting to be certified by the FDA, which could take years. So when I am travelling I will buy my sunscreen in Canada prior to flying out to ensure I keep using the best products I can in preventing skin cancer.
